Jewish foundation texts I, part A

Objectives This subject looks at providing students with an understanding of the key foundation texts of Judaism and Jewish civilisation and of the role of these texts in the development of Jewish law and civilisation. It will also provide an understanding of the relationship of the Jewish texts to those of other cultures in the ancient near east. Students doing the subject should have developed skills in the close analysis of texts and of the importance of context in textual interpretation.

Synopsis This subject will involve the close study of biblical texts in order to explore their importance in the development of Jewish law and of Jewish culture and traditions. Questions of context and of the relationship between Jewish texts and those of other cultures in the ancient near east will also be addressed. While no knowledge of Hebrew is assumed, the texts in their original Hebrew will be available for those able to read them.

Assessment Tutorial paper, presented orally and in writing (500 words): 15%
