* Prerequisites: A first-year sequence in Japanese studies or Japanese language, or in women's studies, or at the discretion of the coordinator.

Objectives As for JPS2170 with the additional objective that students should gain experience in generating an original research topic for the essay which demonstrates their awareness of the key issues relating to women in contemporary Japanese society.

Synopsis As for JPS2170.

Assessment Essay (2500 words): 45%
* Tutorial presentation (1500 words): 20%
* Examination (2 hours): 25%
* Tutorial participation: 10%
* For the essay, third-year students are expected to generate their own topic and find a substantial body of source material outside the course references.
