Critical debate on contemporary Japan

Objectives Students should become aware of some of the most significant debates about contemporary Japan which are taking place in the world and develop an informed opinion about the issues.

Synopsis The subject will be organised in a seminar fashion and will begin by introducing students to some important factors shaping public debate in Japan: the impact of foreign pressure on Japan, internationalisation, and political ideology and interest groups at home. Students will then examine a series of debates on important phenomena which are affecting the directions in which Japan is headed at the end of the twentieth century.

Assessment Written (2000 words): 70%
* Examination (1 hour): 30%
