Introduction to Japanese sociolinguistics

Objectives Upon completion of this subject, students should be able to understand a range of theoretical and empirical issues relating to intercultural communication and sociolinguistic aspects of Japanese language use; write research reports; and evaluate published research reports.

Synopsis This subject introduces students to the study of the basic aspects of the Japanese language and system of communication, as well as intercultural communication. Topics include communication problems, speech acts, networks, politeness, discourse structure and others.
