Objectives On completion of this subject, students should be able to refer to Japanese books, journals and newspapers for honours-level research, be able to interview a native speaker for data collection, be able to present their own research topic in Japanese; be able to summarise their research topic in Japanese, and be able to develop skills for further self study. In addition, students should have acquired invaluable experience in designing, implementing, and writing up an extended research project.

Synopsis The honours program is a full one-year program of study. Students may choose either to do the first semester's work in Japan, with the second semester at Monash, or to do the entire program at Monash. Students doing the first semester in Japan will be required to complete an honours dissertation of 15,000- 18,000 words (worth 50%) of the assessment. The other 50% will consist of language work at an advanced level. Students doing the entire program at Monash may pursue a program with the structure given above, or may opt for 25% dissertation of 8000 9000 words, advanced work in the language (50%) and additional coursework (25%).
