Objectives Upon successfully completing this subject, students should feel more at ease in approaching a variety of Japanese texts, should be able to read a variety of texts with fluency, and should be able to recognise a large number of kanji. In addition, students should have enhanced their ability to use Japanese dictionaries for reading and have become familiar with grammar patterns used in everyday textual communication. This subject will consistently cover a higher level of Japanese written texts.

Synopsis This course will aim to provide the students with the opportunity to practice and to develop their skills in reading Japanese, and will particularly emphasise the use of kanji that students have already learnt as well as the ability to read a wide range of kanji. A wide range of texts, including newspaper articles, essays, fiction, non-fiction, and comics, may be utilised. Particular emphasis will be placed on the capacity for independent reading, including the development of dictionary skills.
