Modern Italian literature and society IV

Objectives At the completion of the subject students are expected to have demonstrated: (i) an understanding of relevant narrative features, with particular reference to forms of post-modern narrative; (ii) the ability to analyse a selection of critical texts by the two authors studied and to carry out independently further research on critical theory; (iii) the ability to articulate critical interpretations in coherent essays and seminar presentations.

Synopsis The subject aims at providing an introduction to the narrative of Italo Calvino and Umberto Eco, in the light of recent criticism with particular reference to post-modern interpretations.

Assessment Two essays (1500 words each): 50%
* Examination (2 hours): 35%
* Seminar participation: 15%
