Objectives On completion of the subject students should have a refined knowledge of language structures and functions and operate with accuracy. They should be able to discuss issues in both formal and informal situations; write descriptive, informative and argumentative texts. Their understanding of Italian syntax, and comparative linguistic structures should enable them to avoid interference with English and translate from the two languages.

Synopsis The subject is thematically organised and presents a variety of texts regarding aspects of contemporary Italy through which to explore register variations and discourse strategies. The subject reviews areas of syntax considered problematic and aims at consolidating oral and written expression. Translation is studied to foster awareness of comparative linguistic structures in Italian and English.
