Objectives Students successfully completing this unit should be able to identify the characteristics of different literary genres in classical Malay and to interpret their meanings within the appropriate socio-cultural context. They should also have developed facility in reading Jawi script.

Synopsis This subject builds on the knowledge gained in Introduction to Classical Malay. By means of analysis and discussion examples are introduced of a range of literary genres. Some texts are presented in Jawi script.
