Introduction to Classical Malay, part 1

Objectives On successful completion of this unit students should be able to analyse particular products of Classical Malay literature in the context of Malay cultural history.

Synopsis The development of Malay literature is discussed against the background of the early cultural history of the Indonesian Archipelago. Selected passages from well-known works in Classical Malay are read with attention to grammatical and lexical features and an introduction to the Jawi script is given.

Assessment Examinations (2 hours): 60%
* Periodic reports: 40%
