* With the permission of the head of the department, intending majors in English, politics or American studies with a special interest in American literature, US politics, or other area of American studies may take HSY2230 without having completed a first-year history sequence

Objectives As for HSY2240 with the additional objectives that students gain greater understanding of the role of social and economic forces in the making of the modern United States and demonstrate a more highly developed capacity for independent research using documentary sources.

Synopsis As for HSY2240.

Assessment Two exercises (750 words each): 20%
* Research essay (2500 words): 40%
* Examination (2 hours): 30%
* Tutorial work: 10%
* Third-year students will be expected to demonstrate more sophisticated analytical skills and submit work incorporating a higher level of competence in independent reading and research.
