Objectives As for HSY2220 with the additional objective that students gain a deeper understanding of the relationships between tradition and modernity and of structures of international relations in Asia since the 19th century.

Synopsis As for HSY2220.

Assessment Essay and paper (4000 words): 50%
* Examination (2 hours): 40%
* Class participation/attendance: 10%
* Third-year students will be expected to demonstrate more sophisticated analytical skills and submit work incorporating a higher level of competence in independent reading and research.
