* Prerequisites: A first-year sequence in HSY or Indo/Malay or permission of the head of department

Objectives As for HSY2190 with the additional objectives that students should show critical comprehension of the history and contemporary use of such concepts as `nation' and `nationalism' and use a broader range of documentary evidence.

Synopsis As for HSY2190.

Assessment One document exercise, one tutorial paper and a research essay (5000 words): 80%
* Examination (1 hour): 20%
* Option of an additional essay of 1000 words in place of examination
* Third-year students will be expected to demonstrate more sophisticated analytical skills and submit work incorporating a higher level of competence in independent reading and research.
