Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed a close familiarity with four key examples of the contemporary novel in the German-speaking countries and completed in-depth analyses of each of the novels as examples of contemporary literature. Students should also develop an appreciation of a specific Central European perspective in contemporary fiction, and the ability to link the texts studied to the social, political and intellectual life of contemporary Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Synopsis As for GRN 2235. The study of novel writing in the German speaking countries with special reference to historical and social context and the poetics of the novel.

Assessment Written (4000 words): 70%
* Examination (1 hour): 30%
