Modern German literature and society I: the individual and dictatorship

Objectives The aim of the subject is to enable students to gain an understanding of the literature of the period in relation to the Third Reich and the postwar years; to develop their capacity to analyse and critically evaluate representative literary texts of the period with special reference to attempts to interpret the phenomenon of National Socialism. Students should demonstrate textual knowledge and understanding through a detailed analysis of an extract from one of the texts studied

Synopsis This subject examines German literature, social and cultural history between 1930 and 1960 through the study of selected texts.

Assessment Written (2000 words): 65%
* Examinations (1 hour): 35%
