Objectives Students completing this subject will have developed a critical awareness of constructions of female and sexual identity; social contexts of female (self-)representation; and aspects of critical theory relevant to these questions.

Synopsis An introduction to representations of women in the context of social history. The subject will examine the theme of adultery, images of the prostitute, the figure of the femme fatale, gender and social class. It will raise questions concerning narrative strategies, psychoanalytic theory and feminist criticism.

Assessment Two short class presentations (1000 words each): 40%
* Class test (2 hrs): 20%
* Essay (2000 words): 40%
