Introduction to English-in-use: form and structure

Objectives To offer the second language speaker of English a broad conceptual study of the development and use of the structures of the English language as a code of meaning that operates in many contexts.

Synopsis This subject will develop in depth some of the language features studied in first semester. Through the study of selected texts students will be given the opportunity to examine some of the unique grammatical, syntactical and semantic features of the English language. At the same time students will be able to increase their understanding and use of the functional aspects of English with special attention given to the various means of processing both oral and written information.

Assessment Written (1500 words): 35%
* Examinations (3 hours): 40%
* Seminar participation: 5%
* Seminar paper: 20%
