Shakespeare: text and performance

Objectives As for DTS2630 with the additonal objectives of developing some basic knowledge of Elizabethan and Jacobean political, social and philosophic contexts in which the plays are situated, an awareness of diverse theoretical and critical approaches to Shakespeare, and some knowledge of Shakespearean performance history in England and around the world.

Synopsis As for DTS2630.

Assessment Essay (1500 words): 30%
* Oral presentation (1500 words): 30%
* Examination (3 hours) or participation in the performance seminar which will include either written work with performance or a long essay (3000 words): 40%
* Students at third-year level will be expected to engage with critical and historical perspectives on the texts, reflected in their written work and oral presentations.
