Synopsis This subject consists of a study of Indonesian theatrical traditions in their social contexts, beginning by examining the roles of performance in the ritual and social life of `traditional' communities, then the rise of popular theatre under the impact of European cultural influence, and the subsequent development of modern theatre in the national language, Indonesian, as part of `national culture'. For further details see the entry for INS3310 in the Department of Asian Languages and Studies.
