Independent theatre practice

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed enhanced skills in the area of theatre activity in which they have chosen to specialise, and in its analysis, and an understanding of the operation of those processes in the theatre industry and in the off-campus community in general. They should acquire a solid basis in theory and practice from which to pursue further academic and performance work in areas such as acting and direction, choreography and movement, lighting and design, theatre administration, and dramaturgy and performance analysis.

Synopsis This subject provides an opportunity for students to pursue, under close academic supervision, an approved project in performance-making and related areas of the theatre industry which develops off-campus skills which cannot be fully pursued within the drama and theatre studies program offered at Monash. It will characteristically involve a direct relationship with the profession, and will always require a balance between practical experience and scholarly research.

Assessment Where appropriate, students will be assessed by a monitoring panel on the quality of their final contribution to the project: 60%
* Essay or journal analysing its process (3000 words): 40%
* Relative proportions will be negotiated where the student's involvement is less visible
