Objectives At the completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the function and use of several operating systems; perform basic file handling tasks with several operatiing systems; discuss the operating environment of computer systems and the impact that environment has on computing applications; demonstrate an understanding of basic network structures; and demonstrate skills in establishing a peer-to-peer network structure
Synopsis This subject familiarises students with a variety of computer operating environments in which computing applications function. Students are introduced to several operating systems (eg DOS, Windows, UNIX) to provide them with an understanding of file systems, operating system commands, editing tools and file handling operational tasks, such as copying, deleting, renaming and managing directory structures. Where applicable, security issues will be addressed. Students will gain an understanding of basic network structures, and will be exposed to peer to peer and client-server network architectures.
