Introduction to cultural studies II

Objectives To introduce students to further aspects of the contemporary discussion of popular culture and to provide students with some of the critical skills necessary for cultural analysis.

Synopsis Continuing the work of CLS1040, this subject will examine further aspects of popular culture including advertising, fashion, shopping malls, television programming and mass entertainment. Emphasis will be given to understanding the nature of contemporary Australian society drawing on such diverse materials as representations of Australia in blockbuster films, news reportage on television, and the ordinary practices of everyday life.

Assessment Essay (2000 words): 40%
* Examination (2 hours): 40%
* Tutorial work : 20%
