Objectives Building on the skills acquired in `Intermediate Chinese', students should develop: an understanding of the difference between the syntax of the formal written language and vernacular Chinese, making use of the analytical skills acquired in `Intermediate Chinese'; the ability to read the formal written language through the study of graded, annotated authentic newspaper articles. On completion of the subject students should be able to read such articles independently with the aid of a dictionary; socio-political knowledge necessary to comprehend the texts under study whhich will, in turn, enhance students' understanding of contemporary Chinese society and politics.
Synopsis Graded readings of original newspaper articles and other pieces of a topical nature.
Assessment Examinations (2 hours): 50%
* Two class
tests: 20% each
* Seminar participation: 10%
