Imperial Egypt and the Mediterranean world

Objectives To analyse in detail key themes in Egyptian interaction with other Mediterranean cultures with specific reference to surviving archaeological data.

Synopsis The subject provides a detailed description and analysis of ancient Egyptian culture at its height during its best documented phase, the New Kingdom (Dynasties XVIII- XX; 1550- 1069 BCE). It will examine the evidence of texts, monuments and archaeological data. A main theme to be developed is Egypt in the wider context of the ancient Mediterranean world of the Late Bronze Age.

Assessment Tutorial essay (1500 words): 25%

* Examination (2 hours): 40%
