Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should be able to explain the role of psychosocial variables in health and illness states, and deficiencies in the biomedical model; explain the importance of psychosocial factors in patient adjustment to illness and dysfunction, treatment and rehabilitation; indicate how they, as health psychologists, can function as an important member of the health care team; design, implement and evaluate educative and rehabilitation programs in health psychology.

Synopsis Psychology of health and illness: the field of health psychology and the psychologist in health care. Psychological factors in medical disorders. Communication in medical settings. Psychological intervention in health and illness. Psychological aspects to dealing with stress, dying and grief.

Assessment Two tests: 60%
