Objectives On completing this subject successfully (to credit level or higher), it is expected that students will be able to ask substantive academic questions of their own formulation, will have gained familiarity with a range of research techniques and problems, have carried out a sustained program of research, and have generated sustained, contextualised, appropriate and clearly expressed arguments from the detailed study and evidence field of a research topic.

Synopsis A research essay of approximately 12,000 words on a topic of the student's own choosing and as approved by the department's honours and postgraduate committee. The department will appoint a supervisor or supervisors for this project. Students are advised to formulate their topic and plan of research for this as early as possible, and to maintain work on it throughout both semesters. The research essay should be submitted by 31 October.
