Objectives On successful conclusion of the unit, students should be able to recognise keyboard styles by ear and eye and be able to locate them on a chronology of broader artistic styles.
Synopsis A survey of the history of keyboard instruments from the earliest hydraulic organ to the latest electronic reconstruction. In terms of repertoire, the `peak' pieces are examined against the background of styles and forms of lesser known works, with selected works studied in detail.
Assessment Four short assignments (1000) words: 10%
* Four class papers (15 minutes each): 10%
* Essay (4000 words): 40%
* Examinations (3 hours): 40%
