Objectives Students taking this course will gain an appreciation of the role of anthropological research in developing our understanding of modern Japanese society and its major institutions. They will gain an understanding of the interaction between the work of anthropologists and scholars in other disciplines which have focused on aspects of Japanese society such as sociology, labour economics and management.
Synopsis This subject is sometimes offered in the department. The study of Japanese society is introduced through a number of topics usual in anthropology. Emphasis is given to methods of collection of data and other techniques of enquiry.
