Objectives Students successfully completing this subject should have developed an understanding of the dynamics of immigrant experience in twentieth century Australia, the determinants of Australian immigration policy, and an ability to use appropriate theoretical concepts.

Synopsis A study of the history of specific ethnic groups and their interaction in Australia, with coverage of both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Topics include the characteristics of Australian ethnic identity, the experience of Irish and Chinese immigrants, the place of Jews in Australian society, Aboriginal perspectives, the concept of an `Australian way of life,' challenges to Australian nationalism, and the contemporary politics of immigration and multiculturalism.
