Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should have developed an advanced knowledge of German literature and culture in the Romantic period, including its philosophical and other theoretical underpinnings, and a comprehensive understanding of Romanticism's place and continuing importance in German cultural and intellectual life.

Synopsis This subject will consist of a study of the main trends of German romanticism. Special attention is given to its theoretical foundation in the early period, as well as its later transformation under the impact of the aftermath of the French revolution. The texts studied will be selected with particular reference to the students' interests.
