Objectives This course is to (1) explore the dimensions of group form and dynamics in the context of student participation; (2) outline various options possible for group structure and dynamics which can be influenced in order to engender an effective working group.

Synopsis Central to developing the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team is an understanding of how small groups are structured and how their organisation interconnects with their functioning; our own patterns of behaviour and response and how these affect and are affected by working in a small group. As a consequence, this course is designed to examine small group form and dynamics at two levels. The examination of the role of small groups as intermediaries between individual and large organisations within post industrial societies; a range of small groups in various settings. In particular, the relations between their form and group dynamics are explored. Consideration by the individual of their responses and actions within the small group whose members comprise the course. This will involve reflection upon the internal structure and dynamics of this group in comparison to other groups studied. The method of exploration will involve a combination of lectures, group simulations, role playing and group observations during two-hourly weekly sessions. Candidates will be required to organise a class presentation and to review reference materials to produce two 1500 words essays. In addition they will write a course journal recording their lecture notes, reference summaries, individual reflections, simulation preparations and course summary and evaluation.
