Introduction to social science

Objectives At the end of this subject students should have developed an understanding of the concerns and basic methods upon which the social sciences are built. The unit will allow students to assess environmental issues for their social science contexts, implications and opportunities. It will not, in itself, enable students to apply social scientific tools.

Synopsis Provides an introduction to the concerns and methods of social science and to the practical use of the social sciences in their associated professions. The development and maintenance of these professions as understood by social science itself forms part of this course. Further details to be advised.

Assessment (4 points - pre-1998 students) Essay (3000 words): 50%
* Review (1000 words): 20%
* Oral presentation (20 minutes): 30%
Assessment (6 points - 1998 students) Essay (3000 words): 40%
* Review (1000 words): 15%
* Oral presentation (20 minutes): 20%
* Take-home examination: 25%
