Objectives As for ENM4050. On the successful completion of this subject fifth year students should in addition have gained an ability to contextualise their understanding of the ways the self is constructed in literature in comparison with fictional narrative personas; a grasp of the historical development of the relevant theoretical approaches to the genre; and a sense of the nexus between the individual and the social self in the consideration of whether American autobiographies reflect a distinctive national consciousness.

Assessment Report on theoretical reading (1000 words): 15%
* Oral seminar paper (submitted in writing later, 2000 words): 25%
* Essay (3000 words): 50%
* Seminar participation: 10%
