Objectives Students successfully completing the dissertation should have demonstrated a mastery of scholarly conventions and protocols, a capacity to undertake a substantial research task, and an ability to argue a lucid and sustained thesis.
Synopsis A dissertation (9000-12,000 words) on an approved topic of the candidate's own choice. The dissertation topic should, ideally, be decided upon and approved well in advance so that a supervisor may be appointed and much of the work done during the long vacation and first semester. In connection with the thesis, there will be a short subject in methodology during some weeks of the first semester and a series of seminars to discuss work in progress. Two copies of the dissertation must be submitted in typescript and suitably bound not later than the Monday following the last teaching day of the relevant semester.
