Research methods for Asian studies

Objectives On successful completion of this unit students will have an understanding of issues, methods and ethical consideration in the formulation and presentation of research proposals and outlines, and have a general appreciation of problems of research in a cross-cultural setting. Student should have become familiar with the major bibliographical, statistical and other sources of information on Asia and with methods of searching the Internet and databases relevant to their area of interest. Students will understand the principles of survey design, questionnaire development and other forms of research in an Asian setting. Familiarity with basic methods of data analysis and presentation should have been achieved.

Synopsis This unit will present a general overview of research methods, techniques, and resources available in the field of Asian Studies. Problems of cross-cultural research methods will be discussed, with special reference to Asia. Library, statistical and other sources of information will be reviewed, and there will be particular attention given to the use of the Internet, CD-ROMs and other electronic systems, with practical experience. Design and administration of surveys will be reviewed, along with other forms of enquiry. Students will be encouraged to use the subject to define and work on the early stages of the research outline and proposal of their own projects.
