Objectives To enable students to learn for themselves that social research is a creative problem-solving activity; become knowledgeable about the various strategies that are available to investigate their chosen research topic, and to be aware of choices and constraints at each step of the research process; and demonstrate their ability to undertake a larger research project for a masters degree.
Synposis The purpose of this subject is to develop the student's ability to undertake research for a masters degree by first carrying out a smaller exploratory research project. Under individual supervision, and on a topic of his or her own choosing, students will learn research skills in terms of formulating a research topic in a specialised area, designing an empirical study, piloting the study, and writing a research report on the preliminary findings.
