Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should execute work addressing both practical and conceptual briefs with confidence in their own competence; evaluate design problems and approach them perceptively and appropriately; express an informed personal vision through experimentation and critical inquiry; demonstrate competence in the use of materials and design tools to obtain a high standard of finish and presentation.

Synopsis This unit deals with research methodology, concept development and resolution of problems in two and three-dimensional design. Projects provide opportunities for students to develop and understand the context that informs their work. Students consider the relationship between form and communication. Design issues, critical theories and histories are explored in relation to assigned projects. The studio is supported by a smaller unit of study called `practice studio'. Studio operates as a 1.5 hour weekly tutorial. During this time students explore and experiment with design techniques and processes relevant to current assignments.

Assessment Major projects: 80%
