Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to achieve a competent representation of the human figure through painting and drawing; be versed in making meaningful decisions about the suitable spatial context for a given figure study, the posing of subjects, suitable accoutrements and lighting; be able to approach figure studies with a variety of technique and means of notation; be able to express an advanced understanding of the structure, anatomy and the innate life of human subjects through the mediums of painting and drawing; be able freely to consult a large body of reference in the history of western figure painting and drawing and consider critically the continuing meaning of the genre in the context of contemporary culture.

Synopsis This semester provides a practical introduction to the specialized knowledge and skill required for figure studies in the mediums of painting and drawing. Through a sequence of studio sessions which make use of the life model, skills in observation, representation and characterisation will be promoted. Issues related to the suitable posing, setting and lighting of individual human figures will be explored through projects of varying technical means and intensity.
