Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should have advancing skills in traditional painting techniques; have begun to develop their own iconography and conceptual concerns; be broadly researching other artists' work especially those relevant to their own; be experimenting in the use of materials; have an advancing perceptual skills and critical sensibility; be able to speak intelligently about their own work and provide constructive critique on the work of others; have deepened their understanding of the critical, and theoretical issues surrounding contemporary painting; be practicing health and safety procedures in the studio.

Synopsis This subject broadens the basic knowledge of painting skills and techniques acquired in the first year of the course. In particular it develops the creative and expressive potential inherent in students' work. Students are encouraged to articulate their emerging conceptual and expressive strengths so these may be developed in subsequent years. Set projects still occur but the emphasis is on self-motivated approaches. Teaching methods tend to concentrate therefore on individual tuition, group critique and discussion.
