Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should have basic skills in several printmaking techniques; appreciate the concept of a formal language of and techniques of the print image including composition, the use of line, tone and form; appreciate the concept of a suitable motif for printmaking; have emerging skills in the perceptual analysis of objects, based on drawing skills; appreciate the place of figurative studio practice in the spectrum of historical practices, and certain critical and conceptual issues of contemporary art; understand and practise the principles of occupational health and safety practices in the studio.

Synopsis This subject introduces students to a range of procedures and techniques through set projects. Although conceptual, aesthetic and theoretical concerns are addressed, this subject primarily focuses on developing students' technical and perceptual skills. A found language of visual communication is introduced including, the use of line, tone, texture and form in coherent compositions. Several printmaking techniques are introduced with specific projects to explore their potential for visual expression. Teaching is by group and individual tuition. Health and safety procedures are taught and practiced in the printmaking studios.

Assessment By folio. Initial project or work-in-progress is assessed in the first part of the semester and contributes a weighting of no less than 20% to the final assessment.
