Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate their understanding of ergonomic variables and criteria; apply advanced technical and engineering drawing skills in design; and show their understanding and skill in building simple three dimensional models (mock-ups) for the purpose of validating design concepts clearly and quickly.
Synopsis Students complete exercises and project work related to biomechanics and ergonomics, technical drawing and model making. Topics covered by lectures and demonstrations encompass the design of objects and workplaces, and the effects of interactions between people, systems, colour, thermal conditions, noise, lighting and other environmental factors. The content will include the development, of prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, T-pieces and oblique cylindrical connectors; interpenetrations in card and plastics and construction of practical, dynamic mock-ups using foam core board, paper board and hot-wire plastic foam shaping processes are studied.
