Studio practice

Peninsula

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should have directed their own work with a view to penetrating a series of private and state-funded galleries; will have attempted to reconcile such pragmatic agendas with a genuine desire to improve the quality of the work undertaken; will have the skills to capitalise on the incumbencies of opportunity for the sake of conceptual and artistic development; will have reconciled ambitious strategies for commercial success with artistic and conceptual integrity.

Synopsis Students work largely on their own but confront a series of mock approaches to commercial or state-funded galleries. Their works of craft or design are not assessed in isolation but together with (1) projected letters, artist's statement and press releases and (2) a short essay explaining the ways in which such strategies have been pursued in good faith with a view to the artistic advancement of the work.
