Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should have demonstrated that they have a deep understanding of how other forms of knowledge, especially those derived from social theory, philosophy and aesthetics, have a bearing on the contemporary production and evaluation of art; that they can confidently produce appropriate critical analyses of contemporary craft or art, by locating works within the context of relevant theory; that they can use conceptual and critical language with accuracy and facility.

Synopsis A range of theoretical and critical approaches to craft and art will be examined. Discussion groups will involve topics selected from among the following: classical theories of aesthetics and the philosophy of art, the history of ideas in general, the art/craft debate, feminism, methodologies of criticism, deconstruction, poststructuralism, postmodernity and postmodernism, post-colonialism.
