Objectives On successful completion of this subject will have a familiarity with the basic skills and tools involved in metal manipulation in order to produce finished pieces; an understanding of the elements and principles of design and analyse design concepts against objective criteria; developed an effective use of source information in formulating design solutions; an understanding of the synthesis between concept, design solutions, process and studio production; the ability to explore the creative potential of metal and other appropriate materials; and a knowledge of safety procedures and their application in respect to chemical, power tools and large equipment.

Synopsis Students will explore the creative potential of metal and other appropriate materials; and have an understanding of traditional and contemporary materials, techniques, processes and concepts that are fundamental in formulating an expressive direction in contemporary jewellery/metalsmithing. Design methodology will demonstrate the interaction from initial concept through to replanning and completion of individual projects.
