Introduction to ceramics 1

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should have basic skills in the manipulation of clay and the forming of ceramic objects; have explored a variety of ceramic surface treatments and firing processes; have been introduced to some of the critical, conceptual and theoretical issues of contemporary ceramics; begin to have a historical overview of ceramics; recognise the creative links between ceramics and their major study; be aware of, and practice, health and safety procedures in the ceramics studio.

Synopsis This subject is concerned with the acquisition of fundamental skills in ceramics for students majoring in another area. Studio sessions and tutor demonstrations will introduce students to a range of processes, technologies and conceptual concerns common to the practice of ceramics. Students will be encouraged to analyse and discuss these issues in fortnightly seminars.
