General information

It is your responsibility to make yourself familiar with the rules and regulations of the university that directly apply to you and your course of study. The university Calendar, your faculty handbook and the Student information handbook are there to be consulted: you should also check the official noticeboards regularly throughout the year.

All students, regardless of their status, are subject to the same set of faculty rules and regulations: for example, international students are subject to the same academic and administrative requirements that apply to other students.

Smoking

The university is concerned to promote a healthy environment at each campus by eliminating the exposure of all staff and students to passive smoking whilst on university premises. Smoking is not permitted in any university buildings or vehicles. Advice to smokers on Quit options and courses is available from the health service at Clayton, or community services at Caulfield and Peninsula.

Confidentiality

University policy prohibits the release of information about you to a third party unless you have given written permission for that release. This prohibition includes even your close relatives. There are five exceptions to this policy:

Please note that if you apply for a course at another institution or if you apply for a job, we cannot release your academic record to another educational institution or a prospective employer without your consent.

You should be aware that it is the practice of some departments to post student names on departmental noticeboards. If this is the practice of any of the departments offering subjects which you are taking, and you wish to have your name excluded from such postings, please notify the departments involved in writing.

The Student Admissions and Records Branch homepage displays a range of information regarding the activities of the branch, and includes a link to the university's general statement on the confidentiality of student data. The URL for the branch homepage is http://www.monash.edu.au/sarb/

Correspondence

We send all correspondence to the address that you list as your mailing address. We use the university letterhead, and we quote your student identity number. Please include your number with your name and your address when you write to us, and have your number ready when you telephone us.

You must inform Student Services immediately of any change in your name or your address: even if you go home for the holidays, please let Student Services know.

The university does not accept responsibility if an official communication fails to reach you because you have not notified Student Services of a change of mailing address.

If you send us a facsimile transmission, make sure that anything printed or written on the original is large enough to be clearly transmitted, and then telephone or write to us to confirm transmission.
