International students and student exchanges

Monash International

Monash International at the Clayton, Caulfield, Gippsland and Peninsula campuses, together with Student Services and Research Training and Support Branch are focal points for inquiries from international students. Monash International provides advice and assistance with matters such as visa renewal, health cover, accommodation/housing, enrolment/re-enrolment, course advice and course fees, finance, application procedures and referrals for other university services. At Parkville, international students may obtain advice and assistance from the registrar's office, ground floor, Sissons building.

Monash International offers a reception service for new arrivals and organises and coordinates orientation programs which introduce students to each campus. Monash International also encourages and assists with intercultural activities which promote an understanding between Australian and international students. Staff assist with educational and welfare concerns and refer students to services on and off campus, as appropriate.

Monash International maintains contact with various government organisations such as the International Development Program (IDP), Australian Trade Commission (Austrade), Department of Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DEETYA), Australian Agency for International Development (AUSAID), Medibank, and the Department of Immigration, Local Government and Ethnic Affairs (DILGEA). Monash International also organises orientation for international students, looks after their well-being and has established an extensive student support network program. Student exchanges and study abroad

Monash organises several broad-based exchange programs with universities in the United States, Europe, and Japan (to name a few). If you are interested in participating in an exchange program contact the Education Abroad Unit in the basement of administration building 3.4 on the Clayton campus (telephone 9905 1551).

If you are a Monash University student going on exchange to an overseas university, you must enrol at Monash, pay (or defer) the HECS fee, and pay the student amenities fee before leaving for overseas. If you will be overseas during enrolment periods then you must arrange for a proxy to complete your enrolment. As a member of an exchange program, you do not pay overseas tuition fees.

AUSAID

The Australian Agency for International Development (AUSAID) administers the Australian Government's overseas aid program. An important part of this program is the sponsoring of overseas students for study in Australia. Assistance is available to sponsored students through their training officers.

Monash International manages AUSAID scholarship holders, but is not involved in the selection process. For selection information, please contact the Australian diplomatic mission in your home country.

The Melbourne office of AUSAID is at level 14, 2 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne 3000. Telephone 9221 5410

International students representative groups

Each campus of Monash, other than Berwick and Parkville, has a representative body of international students. Committee positions are elected annually through secret ballot. Other committee positions may be filled at a duly constituted general meeting or may be co-opted by the committee.

These groups promote and look after the rights and interests of all Monash international students; they encourage and assist in the cultural, social and educational activities of international student groups, and encourage understanding and cooperation between Australian and international students.

Each service assists students with welfare problems and also acts as a referral to other services provided within and outside the university. Overseas newspapers, magazines (such as the New Straits Times and Asiaweek) and tea and coffee are available.
