Theoretical physics

Objectives The aim of this subjects is to introduce students to some of the basic physics that underpins a modern university physics subject. At the successful conclusion of this subject students will be able to understand a range of fundamental concepts from the core units of `Applications of quantum mechanics', `Electromagnetism and statistical mechanics'; apply a series of theoretical techniques within this subject core; extend mastery of this core to related subject areas of knowledge of particular interest to the student; write short reports on theoretical physics topics; present a short seminar on a topic in theoretical physics.

Synopsis This subject can be taken together with another twelve-point third-year subject, including PHS3031 or PHS3151. The subject consists of six units which may be chosen from the third-year physics units offered by the department. The compulsory units are `Electromagnetism', `Statistical mechanics' and `Applications of quantum mechanics'. The remaining three units will normally be chosen from physics units listed but approval may be granted for a subject or unit from another department.

Assessment Examinations (6 x 1.5 hours): 100%
