Experimental social psychology

Objectives On completion of this subject students will have extended their knowledge of theory and research in social psychology; be able to relate recent published research to current knowledge in several major topic areas in social psychology; have reviewed the impact of modern theoretical approaches, such as cognition and decision-making on theories in social psychology; have compared the contribution of controlled experimental research in laboratory settings to theory development in psychology in general and social psychology in particular; have developed advanced skills in the design and conduct of psychological research.
Synopsis This subject will review recent experimental research and theoretical developments in social psychology. The emphasis will be on the role of laboratory experimentation in testing and refining theories. Topics covered will include person perception, social cognition, attitudes, social influence and social interaction. Distance education students are required to attend a two-day weekend or residential school program.
Assessment Two laboratory reports: 50% * Examination: 50% * A pass on the examination is a requirement for successful completion of this subject.
