Introduction to nursing studies 2: Realities of contemporary nursing
3 points * 4 hours per week * Second semester * Gippsland and Peninsula
Objectives On completion of this subject students are expected to identify sources of knowledge used to generate discipline knowledge; discuss key influences, such as culture and gender, on nursing practice knowledge; identify critical thinking processes in the evaluation of nursing knowledge and practice; demonstrate a knowledge of common law and statute law pertinent to nursing practice; utilise an ethical decision making framework to assist in resolving ethical issues or dilemmas in clinical practice; demonstrate an ability to use information technologies in computer assisted learning and computer-assisted instruction for nursing care; describe the elements of problem solving, clinical reasoning and research processes utilised in health care.
Synopsis This subject will build on the knowledge and skills developed in NUR1201 (Introduction to nursing studies I) and also assist students to explore key contemporary nursing issues and those aspects of the culture, law and ethics which are relevant to current nursing practice. In the exploration of these issues the students will further develop their ability to use critical thinking skills and explore the nursing literature related to law and ethics.
Assessment Essay: 40% * Presentation: 30% * Examination: 30%
